Building on the skills and confidence you developed in the Gentle Watercolor, this workshop invites you to take your ideas a step further. Explore how a simple sketch, thoughtful composition, and expressive use of color can transform an idea into a finished painting.
We’ll work larger and bolder while exploring watercolor techniques including:
Wet-on-wet painting
Loose interpretation and expressive mark-making
Creating shadows and depth
Enhancing backgrounds
Working in black and white
Exploring the many variations and possibilities of mixing greens
Bring a favorite photograph, a live flower or small plant, or even a meaningful memory to use as inspiration. No matter where you are in your artistic journey, you’ll be encouraged to experiment, have fun, and focus on the larger picture rather than striving for perfection. There are no mistakes in art—only opportunities to explore.

If you’ve taken Nancy’s Gentle Watercolor workshop, this class will build on the skills and techniques you’ve already developed. If you’re new to the series, you’ll find a welcoming, supportive environment where you can jump right in. All experience levels are welcome, and you’ll be guided along the way.
Nancy Ballard's love of art began in childhood, when she first discovered the magic of brush and paint—a sense of wonder that continues to shape her work today. After a full life as a mother, grandmother, and corporate professional, she returned to art following her retirement in 2006, studying watercolor with Mary L. Harden at Strybing Arboretum. In 2009, she was recognized as a Master Artist of Botanical Illustration by the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society. Nancy has also worked as a gallery curator and exhibiting artist throughout the Bay Area, sharing her botanical work in galleries, wineries, hospitals, and nonprofit spaces while supporting environmental awareness through art.
